Reception Welcomes Sheldon!

March 2025

This week, Reception had an unforgettable experience that we’re sure they’ll talk about for a long time! Their classroom was graced by a very special guest: a Russian Tortoise named Sheldon!

 Who Is Sheldon?

Sheldon the tortoise made his way to our Reception class, and the children were absolutely thrilled! Known for their friendly nature and slow, steady movements, Russian Tortoises are a wonderful animal to learn about, and Sheldon did not disappoint.

Sheldon’s visit was a fun and educational way to introduce the children to the wonders of the animal kingdom. Our young learners had the chance to observe him up close, watching as he carefully explored the classroom floor, his little legs moving at their own pace. They learned about the unique features of Sheldon’s species, including how they can live for up to 50 years and their love for warm, dry climates.

Learning About Tortoises:

During Sheldon’s visit, the children were eager to ask questions, such as "What does Sheldon like to eat?" and "Why is he so slow?" Teachers shared fascinating facts about Russian Tortoises, like how they are herbivores and enjoy a diet of leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables. The children also learned that Sheldon’s shell isn’t just for decoration—it’s an important part of his body, protecting him from predators and keeping him safe.

There was also a special moment when the children had a chance to help take care of Sheldon, making sure he had a little snack and observing how he moved around his space. This hands-on experience helped the children understand the importance of looking after animals and respecting their space. The children’s eyes lit up as they interacted with Sheldon, and the excitement was contagious!
