A group of Year 4 pupils were excited to attend a Creative event at Girls High school.
The day began with a talk by Dr Yarnald, the curator of Wolverhampton art gallery where he shared the work of Edwin Butler Bayliss and his collection of art work, representing images of our city of Wolverhampton within the Black Country in the Industrial Revolution. We explored the use of colour, images and the shading and representations of fire, smoke, transport and industry. We used the paintings to ask questions about what we saw and what people's lives were like.
After hearing his presentation, we set to work using our sketching and blending skills to create a piece of artwork representing what we had seen. We had lots of fun and enjoyed using the charcoal, pastel and chalks to blend and smudge to create smoky effects. We even got a free pencil!
After lunch, we had a creative writing session. We analysed an author's language choices in a poem and then used colour synonyms and descriptive language to create our own short poem to fit our artwork. We enjoyed discussing using metaphors to build up negative and positive effects, and how repetition can build an image in the reader's head and the impact of our words.
What a fantastic days work - Elston children really shone with their answers in the discussions and the work they produced. We represented our school proudly, with both our involvement and focus and also our impeccable manners and behaviour - well done to you all. Mrs BC was very proud of us all.
Thank you to Girls High and Dr Yarnald for giving us this opportunity.
