Welcome to Year 2

We hope that you and your children had a very enjoyable Christmas break and we would like to welcome everyone back to the start of the spring term. The spring term is always a busy time for children in Year 2.

In English, we will continue to concentrate on grammar, punctuation and spelling every day, through discrete lessons and as part of our daily English lessons. Children will have the opportunity to practise these skills across a range of different texts including recounts, information texts, stories and poems.

In Maths, we will continue with the Maths Mastery approach. In the Spring term we will introduce multiplication and division. During out work we will explore a range of manipulatives to support with our working out. We will also begin to introduce the concept of jottings to show our methods. With in our Maths during the Spring term we will also further develop our reasoning skills.

For more information on our learning see Curriculum Overview.

Thematic

This term, our new topic is called ‘Land Ahoy’ which is a Science and Geography based topic. This will begin on Wednesday 8th January with our Inspiration Day. Please see attached the Spring term overview for more details regarding what will be taught this term.

PE

Please ensure that children come to school in the correct PE kit for their sessions. Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days. Children may be asked to remove earrings before PE lessons if they are worn on those days.

Year 2 PE sessions are:

Class 7 – Tuesday and Friday

Class 8 – Thursday and Friday

Class 9 – Wednesday and Thursday

Homework

Children in Year 2 receive regular homework. Spellings are given out on a Monday and tested on the following Monday. We expect children to complete their reading comprehension homework after reading their books and the questions are usually found inside the front cover of their reading book. If possible, children should complete at least one comprehension per week. Additional creative homework (purple book) is also sent out 2-3 times per half term. If time to complete homework is sometimes limited, please concentrate on listening to your child read, if only for a few minutes each day. Thank you for your support at home.

In an effort to provide you with as much information as possible, we have included an overview of what your child will be learning. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher, who will usually be available at the end of each day. Thank you in anticipation of your continued support.
