The children used the technology of Virtual Reality headsets to explore the Solar System, the Sun, the Moon, a space station and the depths of the ocean. They were able to draw on their knowledge of space from their Science lessons and then use the VR experience to further embed their understanding. The children loved the experience and gained an up-close view of these scenes, accompanied with squeals of delight and surprise as they physically reached out to touch the planets and sea creatures. It was a fantastic opportunity that they all hoped to be able to do again!

Welcome to Year 5

Happy New Year! We hope you’ve had a wonderful break and are ready to start the new term with enthusiasm.

For more information about our learning this term, please click on the curriculum overview.

Thematic

This term promises to be as busy as ever, starting with an exciting Thematic topic titled ‘You’re Not Invited’. Children will continue to engage with all areas of the curriculum through this topic, and we’re eager to dive in.

PE sessions for this term are as follows:

  • Class 16 – Tuesday and Thursday

  • Class 17 – Thursday (with Monday afternoon swimming)

  • Class 18 – Tuesday and Thursday

Please ensure that children come dressed in the correct PE kit on the designated PE days. We’d like to remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school, except for stud earrings. For health and safety reasons, earrings should not be worn on PE days.

P.E
Spellings

Spellings will continue to be grouped according to ability. If your child is working on floppy phonics, they will have three lessons per week and will receive weekly spellings. For children working at age-related spelling levels, they will have one Oak Academy lesson per week and will receive fortnightly spellings, which will be handed out on Tuesdays.

Homework

Purple creative homework books will continue and we aim for it to allow our children to both consolidate their learning from class as well as move their learning on.

Children will still receive reading books tailored to their individual abilities, and we kindly remind you that the expectation to complete a reading journal on a weekly basis remains. This term, the journal will focus on vocabulary, with activities provided in the blue journal book.

The school gate will open at 8:45am and close at 9:00am. Late arrivals will need to report to the main office.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
